Yellow Knit French style market string bag with oranges inside

French Market Bag Knit

Just before my trip to Paris in 2022 I wanted to bring the ultimate parisian wardrobe. This included this cute as Parisian style market bag for carrying baguettes, croissants  flowers and lemons (for some reason). This pattern was made in collaboration with Homespun Knitting, Issue 4.

Construction. This bag is knit flat and then joined by picking up the edges and casting on stitches for the top handle.

Skill Level  This bag would suit an adventurous beginner knitter who is looking to learn new and interesting techniques, as well as for seasoned knitters.

Tension/Gauge
Gauge is not super important for the final piece. However if you’d like to make adjustments to the pattern, use the gauge below for reference.
12 sts 10cm / 4 inches in VEIL STICH using 6mm needles.

Please Note: This pattern has not been tested. To keep the pattern free, I am sharing it as a blog post so that I can update it as I receive feedback. If you have any feedback or questions, please contact me or direct message me on instagram @friday.knits

Suggested Needles

Finished Measurements  Finished bag has a lot of stretch and will be a different finished size for each knitter.

Stitch Pattern/Tutorial Veil Stitch
Cast on any number of stitches you prefer.

Step 1: Insert your working needle into the next stitch knitwise.

Step 2: Wrap the working yarn around the working needle coming under the needle first and then over.

Step 3: Bring the working yarn under the main needle and then over it.

Step 4: Wrap the working yarn around the working needle once more in the same direction as the first time.

Step 5: Work the second wrap through the stitch as normal.

Repeat Steps 1-5.

Double Stockinette
Double Stockinette (also known as Double Knitting) is worked both flat and in the round in this pattern. Each section goes through how to work the stitches.

Abbreviations

Customisation

This bag can be customised so easily. the veil stitch doesn't have a set number of stitches to work in pattern, meaning you can cast on as many or as little stitches as you prefer. You can also use different weight yarns and different sized needles to create the different sized bags.

Straps and Edges
For this next section, I suggest using a 4.5mm circular needle with a cable size 40 inches to accommodates the stitches. Your stitch count is not overly important here. Turn your work to the side and pick up 1 stitches in every stitch space*. The first stitch on your needle counts as a stitch for the next round.
